About Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth (PE) is a bustling port city located in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

PE, nicknamed the “windy city”, is situated within one of South Africa’s largest bays, Algoa Bay, home to a bounty of amazing marine wild life and Blue Flag Beaches.

The bay has unique and favourable conditions due to its position at the conjuncture of two oceanic systems, the Cape Agulhas and the upwelling current of the Benguela, supporting this biodiversity.

To conserve this ecologically unique marine environment, the Algoa Bay was declared a Hope Spot by Dr Sylvia Earle from Mission Blue and the Sustainable Seas Trust in December 2014.

Culture

The languages most spoken in PE include isiXhosa, English and Afrikaans, and no matter which language the locals address you in, they will treat you with a warmth and friendliness that matches no other South African city.

PE offers a vibrant dining out experience from pizza and a craft beer to Springbok Carpaccio and Pinot Noir. Take PE’s Donkin Heritage Trail to sightsee our iconic buildings and monuments and visit the daily African craft markets along the beach front to shop for unique souvenirs.

Travel just outside PE to view the Big Five in the Addo Elephant National Park, boasting spectacular views of the Algoa Bay from afar and incredible elephant sightings. For the hikers, on PE’s doorstep, we have a hiking trail up the Lady Slipper Mountain. This trail is suitable for Novice hikers who want to take a slow and steady ascent to a breath taking view from Algoa Bay to Jeffreys Bay.
